An air ambulance was called as a motor cyclist was taken to hospital following a crash.

The incident took place on the A1231 Wessington Way, near the junction with Sainsbury’s supermarket and the Northern Spire Bridge, Sunderland, on Saturday at around 5pm.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesman said a paramedic crew was passing the scene and stopped to assist the rider.

Air ambulance support were called although the casualty was transported to Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary by the road ambulance.
