Aiden McGeady on the one thing that must change or Sunderland will struggle to pick up points

The Wearsiders fought back from a goal down against Queens Park Rangers on Saturday to earn a 1-1 draw.

McGeady grabbed the crucial equaliser, atoning in part for his poor miss in the first half when the score was goalless.

The 31-year-old admits that Sunderland can't keep chasing games, and says that as well as the defence tightening up, the team must start scoring first in matches if they are to move up the table.

“It is obviously disappointing but the fact we didn’t get beat is a bit of a small positive to take from it,” he said.

“It was the same at Preston last week – we probably had the better chances. I had a good chance and probably should have scored it.

“They scored from a set-piece. It is difficult because it just seems at the minute we are going a goal behind or we are having to score two or three goals to win a game.

“It is going to be difficult to pick up points in this league if you have to do that.

“Overall, I thought we were the better team in the second half and probably should’ve taken three points with another couple of chances that we had."

McGeady's goal was his fourth of the season to continue his fine form, but the winger would rather Sunderland started picking up points at the bottom of the Championship.

“It is pleasing to score at any time but ultimately I want the team to win," he added. "I would rather the team won than score.

“It is good to be chipping in with goals at important times and I want to carry that on as much as I can but ultimately, we want to be winning games,” he continued.

“We are at that stage of the season now when if we don’t start winning games teams will start racing away from us.”
