Adam Johnson is just the latest well-known footballer to be convicted of a serious offence.

Johnson’s arrest came just months after the huge controversy that surrounded Ched Evans’s attempts to find a club to play for following his release from prison.

Former Wales international and Sheffield United forward Evans, now 27, was jailed for five years in 2012 for raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel in Rhyl, North Wales.

He was released from prison in 2014 after serving half of his sentence and provoked a wave of criticism as he tried to return to the pitch.

His attempts to join Oldham Athletic and train with Sheffield United were thwarted by huge public outcries against the clubs.

On Wednesday it was announced that his conviction is to be reviewed by leading judges on March 22 after new evidence emerged in the case.

His case has been referred to the Court of Appeal in London by the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC), which investigates possible miscarriages of justice.
