A19 reopens after firefighters tackle grass blaze

A section of the A19 has now reopened following a grass fire which broke out on the central reservation.

It happened on the stretch of road in Boldon, near to the slip road by Nissan, with police having to close the road temporarily around 3.30pm.

A crew from Washington station managed to put out the fire within 20 minutes by using on hose reel.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service spokeswoman said: "We received 58 calls about the incident.

"We received our first call at 3.27pm and were still receiving calls about the incident at 5pm.

"Fire crews extinguished it within 15 to 20 minutes using one hose reel.

"The A19 was closed for a short while by police, but has since reopened.

"Fire crews have left the scene."

"This is likely to cause some traffic disruption as the road has been temporarily closed by Northumbria Police until firefighting actions have taken place."
