A19 closed overnight after concern for the welfare of a woman in the Sunderland area

The A19 had to close temporarily overnight on Monday, May 31 after concern for the welfare of a woman.

The road was closed in both directions between the A183 (Sunderland) and A690 (Houghton-le-Spring) after police received report of concern for the welfare of a woman in the Hastings Hill area of the city.

Northumbria Police have said the woman was in distress and the road was temporarily closed as a precaution.

A spokesperson said: “At 11.40pm yesterday (Monday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a woman who was on a bridge in the Hastings Hill area of Sunderland.

“The woman was in a state of distress and was spoken to by officers. As a precaution, for the safety of the woman and road users, the A19 was temporarily closed.

“She was later brought to safety and left in the care of medical professionals.”

The road had reopened by 2 am on Tuesday (June 1).
