A closing Sunderland school is going out on a high with A-level success

An historic city school which is closing its doors after more than 130 years is going out on a high.

Staff and students at Sunderland High School were left stunned in January this year when it was announced the school would close this summer.

Despite, the turmoil for everyone, A-level students have again clinched some great results.

The pass rate was once 100% over a range of 12 subjects and 26% of the passes achieved A* and A grades.

An impressive 50% of the passes were A*-B grade and students from the Mowbray Road school are heading to a wide range of universities.

Jackie Robson, Head of Sixth Form, said: “This has been an unprecedented year for the whole of the sixth form, not only have they had to work extremely hard and remain focused on their studies, but they have had to do so in the context of our school’s closure.

“I have every admiration for them, they have done incredibly well.”

She said the sixth formers have not compromised on their commitment to the life of the school and the surrounding community, through volunteering and raising money and awareness for their chosen charities.

Mrs Robson said: “Their educational future has always been our priority, all these pupils will go on to become successful individuals. They have all worked so hard and it has all paid off.

“They will take with them the values of Sunderland High School which will enable them to become successful, compassionate and caring young adults.”

Dr Angela Slater, headteacher at Sunderland High School, said: “I am delighted with the achievements of this very special group of young people. I can’t stress enough how focused these students and their teachers have been over the past months, leading up to this final, successful climax to their school careers.

“Their hard work and determination have been outstanding.”
