250 pigeons killed in devastating allotment fire in Fulwell

An investigation has been launched after a fire broke out at an allotment site in Sunderland and lead to the death of 250 pigeons.

Emergency services were first called the scene shortly after 11pm on Sunday, June 14, where several sheds and pigeon crees were alight.

At its peak, seven fire engines and a command support centre were at the large fire at the allotments off Viewforth Terrace, Fulwell.

Sadly, 250 pigeons are believed to have perished in the fire which destroyed a number of sheds and crees.

The fire, which spread across land measuring 30m by 40m, also destroyed large quantities of industrial, commercial and domestic waste.

Northumbria Police has now been informed an investigation into the fire has been launched.

A force spokesperson said: Shortly before midnight, we were alerted by the fire service to a fire at allotments near Viewforth Terrace, Sunderland.

“Inquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the fire.”

Firefighters battled through the night to control the blaze and the orange light from the flames could be seen for miles.

A spokesman for Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: “Water supplies and access extremely difficult due to gradient and travel distances.

“The fire was extinguished with three jets, a monitor, one hose reel, Cobra cutting equipment and small tools. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus.

“Firefighters from Sunderland Central, Farringdon, South Shields and West Denton attended the incident.”
