17 players who have signed for both Sunderland and Newcastle '“ who would be your Tyne-Wear XI?

Sam Allardyce, who earlier this season became the first manager in history to take charge of both teams, has signed the Easington goalkeeper as a back-up to Vito Mannone and Jordan Pickford.

Over the last 25 years it has become increasingly common for players to have worn the stripes of both North East clubs.

Here we pick a team made up of them.

1. Shay Given - On loan from Blackburn Rovers, a teenage Given went on to win the 1995/96 First Division title at Roker Park. He later went on to play more than 350 times for the Magpies.

2. Barry Venison - The versatile County Durham defender captained Sunderland at the League Cup final in 1985 aged just 20 before moving to Liverpool and then on to St James' Park.

3. Patrick van Aanholt - SAFC's current left-back was loaned to Newcastle in 2010 from parent club Chelsea. He arrived at the Stadium of Light in 2014.

4. Lee Clark - The dynamic midfielder swapped Tyneside for Wearside in 1997 and enjoyed a hugely successful two years in Peter Reid's team. He was sold to Fulham after being seen wearing a t-shirt with a message derogatory towards Black Cats fans ahead of Newcastle's 1999 FA Cup final defeat to Manchester United.

5. Steve Caldwell - The solid defender made more than 50 appearances for Newcastle before moving to Sunderland in 2004, where he went on to win the Championship title in his first season. He retired last summer after a spell with Toronto FC in Canada.

6. Titus Bramble - Signed from Ipswich by Sir Bobby Robson, error prone Bramble made more than 100 appearances on Tyneside before moving to Wigan Athletic. In 2010, then Sunderland boss Steve Bruce signed the defender for £1million.

7. Jack Colback - On Sunderland's books as a youngster, he controversially moved back to his boyhood club in summer 2014 after his contract at the Stadium of Light expired. He is the last Newcastle player to score in a derby game, even though that was in his Sunderland playing days during the Black Cats' 3-0 win at St James' Park in February 2014.

8. Paul Bracewell - Had three spells at Sunderland and in between his second and third batches of appearances for the Black Cats he spent three seasons in the black and white stripes. He is now Sam Allardyce's assistant.

9. Michael Chopra - The striker scored against Sunderland for Newcastle in 4-1 win at the Stadium of Light before being signed by Roy Keane just over a year later.

10. Michael Bridges - "Stickman" was a teenage prodigy under Peter Reid before moving to Leeds United. Following a serious injury his career stalled. In 2004 he was loaned to both Newcastle and Sunderland from the Yorkshire club.

11. Chris Waddle - Plucked from non-league football by Newcastle in the 1980s, Waddle enjoyed a glittering career with Tottenham Hotspur and Marseille before being relegated with Sunderland in their final season at Roker Park in 1997.

12. Lionel Perez/Steve Harper - Cult hero Perez left the Stadium of Light for Tyneside following Sunderland's Play-Off final defeat to Charlton Athletic in 1998.

13. Robbie Elliott - Following two spells with Newcastle, Elliott made seven appearances for Sunderland under Roy Keane.

14. Danny Simpson - The Manchester United man won a Championship winners' medal with Sunderland in 2006/7 before signing for Newcastle in 2010. He now plays for high-flying Leicester City.

15. Andy Cole - A hero for Newcastle for his goalscoring prowess, he moved to Manchester United in 1995, going on to have a trophy-laden career. Made a handful of appearances for Sunderland before retirement.

16. David Kelly - The Irishman enjoyed two-year successful spells with both Newcastle and Sunderland in the 1990s.

17. Louis Saha - The Frenchman made 11 appearances for both clubs.
