Sunderland is home to industry and transport experts, from centuries of shipbuilding and car manufacturing. Yet when it’s time to sell our vehicles, a whopping 65% of us accept we will always lose money on our car – partly because we’re averse to negotiating with buyers, and partly because we don’t truly know what our vehicles are worth.

Ring in the holidays this year by getting ahead of your to-do list; all you need for an instant, free valuation of your car is to enter your reg and mileage on Motorway’s website.

The UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace, Motorway allows you to sell your car online, as well as benefit from their suite of free tools that help you get the best value for your car without any guesswork, by tracking ongoing changes to its pricing, and checking your compliance with Clean Air Zones.

When you log into your free Car Value Tracker account, you can track up to six cars’ values over time and compare their depreciation rates. Car sales made easy

Selling your car doesn’t have to be a chore. Instead of writing long descriptions for classifieds sites or haggling with buyers on social media, you can sit back and let Motorway do the work. Motorway offers a simple – and completely free – method of getting your best price from a verified dealer, and you can even have a sale agreed within 24 hours.

Simply enter your reg on the homepage to get an estimated sale price based on live market data for cars just like yours. You can then complete your vehicle profile from your phone, in a matter of minutes.

Checking your compliance helps you follow changes that may occur in your ongoing valuations, based on your running costs. Picture – suppliedChecking your compliance helps you follow changes that may occur in your ongoing valuations, based on your running costs. Picture – supplied

When you’re ready, enter your car into Motorway’s online daily sale, where it’ll be shown to Motorway’s nationwide network of 5,000+ verified dealers looking to add to their stock of used cars. Interested dealers will compete to buy your car, offering their best price. Rather than having to field these offers and spend all day on your phone, you simply get sent your highest offer at the end of the sale.

Your buyer will turn up to your home or work at an agreed time to inspect your vehicle and make payment straight into your bank account, before driving your car away. If your car is financed, they’ll clear the remaining balance directly with your lender, paying you any surplus if you’re in positive equity.

Choose the best time to sell with Car Value Tracker

People often say that a car’s value plummets once it leaves the dealership – but is that right?

While brand-new cars typically do experience a quick decrease in value in their first three to five years, the full story of car depreciation is much more nuanced and individual. Every car drops, holds, and even gains value based on market demand as well as the vehicle’s age, mileage, and condition.

In recent years, pricing has been influenced by new car shortages, changing emissions regulations, and the cost of living crisis – all of which caused big changes to car values.

Nearly a third of drivers in the UK do not know what their car is worth, as they never check its value. It’s impossible to feel you’ve closed a good deal for your car if you don’t begin prepared with knowledge about its value.

See your car’s valuation history in real time with Motorway’s free car valuation tool. Car Value Tracker maps accurate valuations for your car over the past two years, helping you see how fast or slowly your price is changing. This context is key to deciding on the perfect time to sell.

Have more than one car? Compare the changing values of up to six vehicles at once through your Motorway account. Just make sure you update the reg and mileage for each – and you may be surprised by which cars depreciate the fastest or slowest.

Working with Newcastle’s CAZ

In January 2023, nearby Newcastle launched a Class C Clean Air Zone (CAZ) in the city centre, aiming to reduce air pollution by charging non-compliant taxi, van and lorry drivers.

Although private passenger vehicles and motorcycles are not included in the Newcastle charging policy, Motorway sales data shows that area drivers have been selling their diesel vehicles and non-compliant vans in high volumes compared to other English cities of a similar size.

Even if your non-compliant vehicle isn’t charged in your immediate area, you’re likely to suffer into higher running costs around the country, and in future policies based on fuel type and emissions levels, such as road tax bands.

As cities like Newcastle start enforcing emissions-based driving regulations, pricing for both compliant and non-compliant vehicles has fluctuated with supply and demand. It’s worth regularly valuing your vehicle to stay on top of its changing value.

To check if your petrol vehicle is compliant with Euro 4 emissions standards, or your diesel vehicle is compliant with Euro 6, enter your reg in our free ULEZ checker. The good news is that non-compliant vehicles can still sell for strong pricing, especially when selling into a nationwide network with free home delivery, so that local charging zones are less of a worry to your buyer.
