Villagers show they have plenty of petal power

Easington Village Parish Council launched its hanging basket, window box and floral container challenge after Northumbria in Bloom judges said that, with more interest and support, “much could be achieved”.

Now, 15 years on, the competition is going strong.

The council’s judging team can tour the village during its sessions in July and spot the displays from the roadsides and paths following the same route as the regional competition visitors – boosting its entry in the process.

While the council does not head the entry into the competition, it still runs the floral contest.

Next year, the council plans to change the format of the competition, with details to be put on its website, Facebook page and via its Parish Patch publication.

Judging this year was undertaken by councillors Joan Andrews, Mavis Burn and Jane Smith.

Coun Andrews, vice- chairman of the council, said: “The standard of displays was again very high this year.”

A presentation of certificates and vouchers took place at Seaton Holme.

Ross Weightman, of Plants ‘R’ Ross garden centre, has backed the competition since 2004 and awards vouchers to the winners.

He said “It is a pleasure to continue to sponsor the competition”.

This year’s winners are: joint first place Linda and Denis Cornish, of St Thomas Close, and Jack Lee, of Albion House, Low Row; joint second place Fred and Mary Piper, from Stockton Road, and Mrs J Wright, of Flambards, Hall Walks.
