Fantastic new artwork is about to be unveiled in Sunderland but this is unlike any display you are likely to have seen.
The thrilling new work called ‘Timepiece’ will be spread over three floors and 36 screens in the new city attraction Culture House and it will change every hour!
It will be packed with aspects of Sunderland life, some very familiar, others lost in time, but all rooted in the city.
Timepiece will bring an intense burst of colour, images, music and sound from 10am on Monday, November 16 and then every hour on the hour.
Timepiece is a celebratory time signal. Each hour, a fifty-second audio-visual collage will radiate through the centre of Culture House.
Among the themes to unfurl every hour will be a 1950s bus ride through the city, the building and launching of a Hindustan Shipping Co. ship at Doxford shipyard, and glassblowing in the 1960s.
It will also include brewing beer at Vaux Breweries, the changing face of the city’s shops, football at Roker Park and the Stadium of Light, Sunderland’s golden sandy beaches and city landmarks such as the ABC Cinema, the clock on Joplings department store and the Penshaw Monument.
Timepiece was commissioned as part of Digital Spaces, supported by The Space in association with Arts Council England.
Each collage teems with moving images, clips and little offbeat details and will replay randomly across the thirty-six screens, ensuring that no two hours of the day will be the same.
