Even though many of the seasonal attractions are still closed until spring, here’s a round up of some of the activities taking place around the North East for the holidays, which run from February 18.
5. Alnwick in Wonderland, Alnwick Garden
Alnwick Garden in Northumberland will be hosting an Alnwick in Wonderland extravaganza over the half term. Starting February 19 and running until February 27, you can join the Madhatter's trail, meet your favourite characters from the classic tale and receive a free craft to take home. The event is free with garden entry and will be running every day next week. Photo: Stu Norton
6. Ocean Beach pleasure park, South Shields
Have a whirl at Ocean Beach Pleasure Park in South Shields which is fully open for the half term, with rides open from 12noon to 5pm. Avoid the queues by buying a Funcard from the website or download the app so you can top up credits for rides. You also get 4 free credits when you spend £20. Photo: jpi media
7. Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve, near Houghton
Take in the fresh air at Rainton Meadows Nature Reserve near Houghton. Operated by Durham Wildlife Trust, it's home to stoat, weasel, brown hare and roe deer who are regularly seen and the wetlands attract numerous dragonflies and damselflies. Butterfly numbers are also high, particularly grassland species. Native ponies also play a vital role in the site's conservation efforts. Entrance to the reserve is free but they suggest a donation of £2.50 for parking for non-Durham Wildlife Trust members. Photo: jpi media
8. Ways to Play, South Shields Museum and Art Gallery
Take part in a Sensory Journeys digital story-telling sessions at South Shields Museum until February 27, where you create the sights, sounds, smells, touches, and tastes to bring the stories to life. Listen to unique fictional stories including: 'Davy's First Shift': the tale of a 12-year-old boy working down the coal mines as a trapper boy for the very first time and 'To Catch a Smuggler': the story of three children who discover a smugglers cave while at family picnic on Marsden Bay.
