Backhouse Park

Ryhope Rd, Sunderland SR2 2EF

There are three well signposted routes around the park, at one, two and three kilometres in length and ideal for all dog breeds and fitness levels.

Ideal for a close by escape into nature, the greenery and flowers budding in the park all year round make for beautiful seasonal walkies.

Backhouse Park is located within walking distance of the city centre.

Barnes Park

Just under two miles in length, Barnes Park is the biggest in the heart of Sunderland and ideal for owners looking for a stroll without travelling too far.

Should you be looking for a bite to eat or a hot drink to heat you as you saunter along on your winter's walk, there is a cafe in the park and a Victorian bandstand to rest your legs.

The location and well maintained nature of the park allows access for every person and dog breed.

Hetton Lyons is home to a sporting pond and vast open stretches of greenery for you and your dog to wander around.

There are a number of orienteering routes and activities in the park, so while it is not a quiet tranquil stroll throughout the day, an early morning visit could give your pooch freedom to roam around.

There is also a cycle path through the park which is part of the national cycle route, ideal if you want to pedal alongside your pet but also worth taking a lead along in case the paths are busy.

Located 25 minutes’ drive from the city, it is a lovely break from city life.

Roker Seafront Coastal Walk

This circular walk along Sunderland’s seafront begins at Roker promenade and is perfect for a sunrise or sunset stroll.

Take in views of sundown reflecting onto the water as your dog enjoys the freedom of the two mile-long walk.

Roker pier and promenade are steeped in World War One history and are just across from Roker park where more playful pooches can let off steam..

The car park provided for visitors to the park and pier is just 10 minutes outside of Sunderland city centre.

This country park is popular among locals and visitors to Sunderland as it hosts a number of running and music events throughout the year but is also ideal for stunning nature walks with man’s best friend.

The 30 acres of nature is located just 15 minutes from the city centre, and the park has cycle routes, a boating pond and various sculptures which pay homage to the history and culture of Sunderland.

There is also a family cycle route and skate park within the grounds, so it would be advisable to bring a lead for even the best behaved dogs.
