With apologies to any fine establishments which haven’t made the cut, here are 13 pubs you may want to visit on Saturday, July 13, 2019. Not that we would suggest having a pint in all of them, of course.
1. Colpitts Hotel
Hawthorn Terrace. Follow the A690 out of town on foot towards Crook and you'll reach this homely Samuel Smith refuge within minutes. Possibly Durham's cheapest boozer. Photo: UGC
2. Half Moon Inn
New Elvet. Don't be immediately put off if this mainstay Durham bar appears packed at first glance. Take a quick recce through the back to see if its spacious beer garden offers deserved sanctuary from the madness outside. Photo: UGC
3. Head of Steam
Reform Place, off North Road. Tucked away in a pleasant courtyard just down from the bus station, the Head of Steam is one of Durham's hidden if slightly more expensive gems. Serves a variety of real ales and foreign beers. Photo: UGC
4. Holy GrAle
Crossgate. Durham's latest real ale bar, residing near the popular Angel and Ye Old Elm Tree pubs, opened at Easter and deserves your blessing. Photo: Gavin Ledwith
