Unique Sunderland restaurant closes its doors with immediate effect
One of Sunderland’s most unique restaurants has received a wave of well wishes after announcing it has closed its doors.
The Calabash Tree was the city’s only restaurant specialising in food inspired by the dual-island nation of Trinidad & Tobago, due to owner and chef Ryan McVay’s heritage.

It was one of the first restaurants to open as part of the major restoration of Sheepfolds Stables, opening its doors in August 2024.
The restaurant had built up a following for its authentic dishes and owner Ryan recently represented the city, becoming the first Sunderland chef to do so, in the North East heat of BBC show Great British Menu.
However, at the weekend, Ryan announced the closure of the Sheepfolds Stables site.
Writing on social media, he said: “To everyone that has supported me and the business.
“I am absolutely gutted to be writing this. The Calabash Tree has closed its doors with immediate effect. A number of factors are behind this decision, but to everyone who supported us — whether you came once, brought your family, celebrated with us, or made us part of your routine… thank you. Truly.
“You helped build something we are incredibly proud of. As one door closes, another opens. We are already making plans on something new!”

A spokesperson for Sheepfolds Stables said: “Ryan’s departure from Sheepfolds Stables is disappointing, not only for us, but for his customers.
“We’re working on exciting plans for a number of new food operators to join the culinary line-up at Sheepfolds Stables. We will announce more details really soon.”
Ryan’s post was met with a wave of support for the former firefighter from Washington who turned to cookery after he was injured.
Nick Barnes said: “That’s devastating. I’m so sorry.”
James Walmsley said: “Onwards and upwards mate. Massive respect for everything you’ve created at sheepfolds and in Washington. Big love brother.”
Sheepfolds neighbour I Scream for Pizza said: “Best of luck with everything that comes next.”
For those who are a fan of Ryan’s food, his other business, Cove Caribbean takeaway in Washington, is unaffected by the closure.
He will also be cooking at the forthcoming Sunniside Nights festival, taking place on May 29, with a special one-night pop up at Midnight Pizza Cru within Bridge Hotel Vaults.
The night will feature some of the dishes he created for the BBC’s Great British Menu, along with variations from his classic menu.
