Fourteen pubs from across Sunderland, plus two close by in South Tyneside, are among 4,500 entries in the 2021 Good Beer Guide published by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra). With bars nationwide facing closure as part of the latest coronavirus lockdown from Thursday, November 5, let’s hope it is not too long before we can toast their success inside these premises.
9. The Guide Post, Ryhope Street South, Sunderland
Its entry reads: "This friendly, popular, street-corner local has three handpulls – the guest beers will always include one light ale. With a cask ale club, sports TV, a pool table, a Thursday quiz, regular weekend entertainment and dominoes and poker on Sunday, there is something for everyone here." Photo: Frank Reid
10. Harbour View, Harbour View, Sunderland
Its entry reads: "A modern local pub with six handpulls offering regularly changing beers chosen by local Camra members. A board displays a tally of beers to date from 1 January – the aim is to offer in excess of 600 ales a year." Photo: JPIMedia
11. The Ivy House, Worcester Terrace, Sunderland
The guide says: "Tucked away but five minutes’ walk from the Park Lane public transport interchange, the Ivy House is well worth seeking out. Six varied guest ales and a cider are on offer, as well as extensive range of bottled international beers." Photo: Tim Richardson
12. Ship Isis, Silksworth Row, Sunderland
The guide's 2021 entry comments: "This place was restored to its original Victorian splendour by the former Jarrow Brewery in 2011. It has ten handpumps offering six or more cask beers, two real ciders and a perry, served by very knowledgeable staff." Photo: Stu Norton
