New Japanese restaurant heading to Sunderland with sushi, ramen and sashimi on the menu
Sunderland is set to say konnichiwa to a new Japanese restaurant, specialising in sushi, ramen, sashimi and more.
The city centre has been missing a dedicated sushi spot since Nudo closed its doors opposite the train station and the news that plans for Asian restaurant The Muddler, set to feature a sushi bar, have been scrapped for Keel Square.

However, that gap in the food market is set to be filled by Miso House.
The final stages of fit out are taking place at the former shop unit next to Biz-R on High Street West to create Miso House.
The interior will feature Japanese lanterns and fabrics featuring traditional motifs from the Far Eastern country, such as waves and koi, with dishes served on traditional tableware and tea sets.
It’s being brought to the city by the same team behind The Korean Spoon, which opened last autumn as the city’s first dedicated Korean restaurant on Fawcett Street.

Specialising in dishes, including gimbap, bibimbap and staple Korean drinks such as soju and makgeolli, it’s built up a loyal following, earning praise for bringing some new culinary options to the city.
Miso House is set to have a similar focus on authentic dishes and is set to open its doors in the coming weeks.
In the meantime, the council has confirmed it’s in advanced talks with a new operator for the corner unit in Keel Square after The Muddler owners, Danieli Group, decided to focus on their Stack brand.
An announcement on that new operator is expected soon.
