But in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, many city businesses are bringing Mother’s Day, on March 22, to you. We’ve rounded up ways you can still have your cake and eat it - whilst following Goverment advice.
5. Buy her a book
The latest instalment in The Shipyard Girls series - the Triumph of the Shipyard Girls - was released this week and you can pick a copy up at supermarkets when you're doing the food shop. Priced £7.99, it's by Sunderland author Nancy Revell who was inspired to write her Sunday Times bestselling series by Wearside's own shipyard girls. There are also signed copies available at Fulwell Post Office in Sea Road. Photo: Arrow publishing
6. Commission a local artist
For a unique gift why not commission a local artist? Sunderland artist Kathryn Robertson is often inspired by the landscape and skyline of her home city, with examples of her work on murals in the civic centre, Sunderland University and the Elephant Tearooms. She also takes commissions for portraits and buildings with sentimental dates etc. She's on social media channels under "krillustrates". Photo: Kathryn Robertson
7. Love Lily cupcakes
Order your mam some Mother's Day cupcakes from Love Lily, which has a cakery in Pallion and a tearoom in Roker. A box of six costs £12 , with gluten-free and vegan options available. Tel: 0191 5653942. Photo: Love Lily
8. Flowers
Flowers are still a safe bet for Mother's Day and can, of course, be delivered to limit contact. Most city florists are all geared up for one of the biggest days of the year and are still doing deliveries. Photo: Library photo
