I'm proud to fly the flag for Sunderland at the Asian Restaurant Awards

It’s already one of Sunderland’s most popular Indian restaurants.

“It’s only because of the support of our customers over the years, that we can be nominated for awards like this,” said the owner of one of the city’s top-rated Indian restaurants as they prepare to represent the city on the national stage.

Monie Hussain and his Yuvraaj restaurant in Ashbrooke have been shortlisted in the Fine Dining Restaurant of the Year at this year’s Asian Restaurant Awards.

The awards take place on July 20 in Manchester and Monie is hoping to bring the title back to Wearside.

This July marks 11 years since he opened the restaurant in Douro Terrace and he says winning the award would be the cherry on the top.

“It doesn’t matter how old the restaurant is, winning awards is always exciting,” said the Sunderland businessman.

Yuvraaj is no stranger to awards and has won many over the years.

“When the Echo ran its curry awards, we won it three times in a row. That people find the time to vote and show their support means so much,” added Monie.

Last year marked the restaurant’s 10th year in the city and it celebrated with a big garden party, including fire eaters, traditional dancing and more.

It proved so popular, Monie is planning another one for this year, with details announced soon.

“We did a 10 year garden party last year for the anniversary and its was so popular, I’m doing another one this year. Customers are constantly requesting it,” he said. “Last time, we sold 120 tickets in 20 minutes!

“We have a great outdoor space here, we’re actually extending the car park and completing a new patio, and customers like being able to use the space.

“It was an amazing event and this year’s will be as good, if not better.”
