Greggs drive thru opens in Sunderland at gateway to the city
It’s the latest addition to the former Dewhirst site.

Greggs has opened its new drive thru today, July 31, in Pennywell, creating 20 new jobs for the area, with a drive thru as well as seating indoors.
It’s joined in Wellspring Road by a new Starbucks, which is already open, and is one of a number of additions on the land formerly occupied by Dewhirst, which also now houses a Wickes, Aldi and KFC.
Greggs say you can expect all its classics, as well as its now chicken roll and drinks such as the new iced blueberry matcha.
Other new additions to the menu include a range of salads.
On opening day today, there’s deals running including a drink, a side and a main from £5.25.
The Pennywell branch is also available on Just Eat, UberEATS and Click + Collect via the Greggs App.
Shop Manager Charlie Murkin said: “We can’t wait to welcome both Greggs fans and new customers to our brand-new drive thru. We’ve got an amazing range of iconic savouries, Fairtrade hot drinks, hot food and healthier choices available for takeaway, sit-in or Click + Collect.”

The opening marks the final phase of the regeneration of the former Dewhirst site.
The clothing manufacturer, with roots dating back to the 19th century, had a significant presence in Sunderland, particularly in the late 20th century.
The company employed hundreds of people at its peak, before its Leechmere site closed in 2002 and its Pennywell factory closed a year later.
The site then stood largely vacant until a few years ago when UK Land Estates was granted planning permission in 2022 to develop ‘a new gateway’ to the city.
Greggs drive thru Pennywell is now open Monday – Saturday: 5:30am - 7pm and Sunday: 6am – 6pm.
