One of the key players in the multimillion pound Riverside development that’s changing the face of Sunderland, it came to prominence more this summer with the opening of Keel Crossing.
18 months after the dark horse came to the fore, here’s a rundown of all the food and drink experiences at this hospitality hotspot.

5. Coming soon...
Mother Mercy announced in early December that it had closed its cocktail cabin at Sheepfolds, however, another new drinks operation is heading our way. A stylish wine bar is being created in space behind The Taproom and promises some great quality wines. | Sunderland Echo
6. Ember
Ember has firmly stamped itself on the Sunderland dining map after becoming one of only two restaurants in the city to make it into this year's Good Food Guide (the other being North in Seaburn). It's proved popular thanks to its inventive menus, which change monthly, taking inspiration from a different country or city around the world. It's also one of the best spots in the city to take in views of the new Keel Crossing. | Sunderland Echo
7. I Scream for Pizza
One of the best-designed pizza places in the area, I Scream for Pizza is housed in the old horse hospital in Sheepfolds Stables. It mixes the original features of the building with a retro Americana theme. Order pizzas whole to share or by the slice. There's also a range of American sides and soft serve ice cream. | Sunderland Echo

8. The Calabash Tree
For a kick of Caribbean flavour head to the Calabash Tree. Owner and chef, Ryan McVay, a former firefighter from Washington, grew up enjoying the rich and varied flavours of the Caribbean islands where his mum was born. Coupled with the fact his dad is a former catering lecturer of more than 30 years at Sunderland College, it sparked a love affair with cooking the spices and dishes of Trinidad and Tobago which he turned into his Calabash Tree business. | Sunderland Echo
