Cake trailer set to satisfy your sweet tooth on the Seaburn seafront this summer

Husband and wife team Tommy and Laura Graham have secured a prime pitch next to the Victorian tram shelter in Seaburn for their The Sweet Petite trailer.

The vintage trailer, which they’ve renovated themselves, is there every weekend over the summer, from noon on Saturdays until they’ve sold out, selling cake jars, cookies, tarts, cheesecakes, blondies and brownies, brittles and fudge.

The couple, who juggle baking with their part-time jobs at Tombola, sold out of their cakes and biscuits, all of which are made from scratch at their Doxford Park home, in three hours on their first day last Saturday and say they’ve had great feedback so far.

Laura said: “During lockdown we’d been doing deliveries and a lot of people got to know our brand through that. It was lovely because people were buying them as gifts for family members to show them they were thinking of them. People say it made their day.

"When we put it on social media that we were going to be in Seaburn lots of people were sharing it with their friends. People have been really supportive. The cheesecakes are our most popular cake, we do them in flavours such as Kinder, Oreo and Banoffee and they sell immediately.”

As well as cakes, the couple sell Ginger Beer Jam made with Vaux’s Decent Days and Nights IPA.

Laura explained: “We contacted Vaux to ask if we could use their beer and they sent us two crates to use. We’re planning on doing a jam with Poetic License gin too.”

Speaking about how The Sweet Petite came about, Laura said: “It started in 2014 when I made our wedding cake. I’d never done a cake like it, but it turned out really decent.

“After that, I started a celebration cake business called Sweet Occasion. I wanted a shop but it fell through and I just couldn’t find the right location. I’d seen a few mobile catering vans about, but no mobile bakeries, so we came up with the idea of The Sweet Petite. We drove down the The Cotswolds to collect the trailer and renovated it ourselves."

The Sweet Petite, which has traded at events at Wynyard Hall, will also be doing food events at Bents Park in South Shields and Spanish City in Whitley Bay when they’re rescheduled.

Other new additions to the seafront include Six which has opened at Pier Point, selling cheese boards, charcuterie and wines.

Stack Seaburn is also due to open this summer after being delayed due to lockdown. The container village will include traders such as Downey’s, Boojie Burger, Chapo’s Tacos, Acropolis street food and Healthy Thaim when it opens its doors.

Part of the wider Seafront Regeneration Scheme, construction work at Stack is back in full flow with a new opening date of August 28.

It comes as the Echo is running its #SupportLocal campaign to encourage people to use local traders.
