September is Food and Drink month, a celebration by National World of everything palate-pleasers across the country.
And to help mark the occasion, we’re toasting some of classic dishes, drinks and other delicacies loved by Wearsiders.
Some are Sunderland-specific, others are more regional but much-loved in the city, and we’ve included national and international favourites which Wearside does particularly well.
Let us know your favourites, and anything you think we’ve missed.

17. Sunderland-brewed beer
Maxim Brewery, Vaux (past and present), Brewlab encouraging new brewers for the future, and microbreweries such as Wear Beer - we've got it all for the discerning drinker. | Sunderland Echo Photo: Sunderland Echo

18. A coffee at one of our great coffee shops
Never was there a better time to be a coffee drinker in Sunderland, with venues across the city striving to serve you the perfect brew. Grinder, Pop Recs, Fausto, Sue’s Cafe, Fern Coffee... there's so many to choose from. | Stu Norton Photo: Stu Norton

19. Müllers, Blandford Street
It's a Sunderland institution that's been keeping Mackems well fed in breads and cakes for decades and Müllers is still going strong. These frog cakes are a particular favourite. | Sunderland Echo

20. Cheesy chips
A bit of a cliche, perhaps, but we couldn’t leave them out. The wonderful combination of two of life’s great comfort foods, particularly well-loved here in Sunderland when we want to indulge ourselves. Photo: jpi media
