September is Food and Drink month, a celebration by National World of everything palate-pleasers across the country.
And to help mark the occasion, we’re toasting some of classic dishes, drinks and other delicacies loved by Wearsiders.
Some are Sunderland-specific, others are more regional but much-loved in the city, and we’ve included national and international favourites which Wearside does particularly well.
Let us know your favourites, and anything you think we’ve missed.

9. Greggs pasty
The North East-based bakery chain has diversified into all manner of options these days, but its humble pasty remains a classic. Clean eating gurus may recoil in horror, but we’ve all treated ourselves at some point. | AFP via Getty Images

10. Panackelty
A traditional one-pot wonder from the Sunderland and Durham area. Recipes vary, but corned beef or sausage with potatoes, onions and carrots tend to be the mainstay ingredients of the dish. Pictured is an upmarket version created by The Wavendon. | Sunderland Echo

11. Pease pudding
You’ll have had it, even if you weren’t sure what it was. This thick, earthy foodstuff - made from split yellow peas - is a go-to sandwich filling, most often to accompany ham. Perhaps in a stottie? | Dicksons

12. A drink in one of our historic pubs
Whatever your poison, the surroundings of our wonderful historic pubs add flavour, zest and character. The locally brewed beers available do come highly recommended, and you may even chance a pickled egg if you’re feeling brave... | NW Photo: Tony Gillan
