This January more people than ever are trying out Veganuary and adopting a vegan diet.
If you’re struggling to find vegan-friendly dishes and snacks, we’ve rounded up some of the options available in Sunderland and Seaham, from the headline-hitting vegan steak bakes at Greggs to hand rolled vegan tacos at independent gem Mexico 70 and an award-winning Sunday Dinner at Clean Bean in Seaham.
1. Vegan tacos, Mexico 70, High Street West
Mexico 70 has long championed vegan food and has 13 vegan dishes on its menu all year round, not just for Veganuary. On Thursday, January 16, it's having a fully vegan menu day. Every dish will be 100% vegan and there will be new dishes available for that day only. Photo: Mexico 70
2. Seitan burger, The Peacock, Keel Square
The Peacock is under new management who've devised a completely new menu. One of the highlights is a handmade seitan burger with vegan cheese and vegan holy moly burger sauce, made by new co-landlord Barry Hyde of Futureheads fame. Note that food is only being served on Saturdays while renovation works take place on the exterior of the building. Photo: The Peacock
3. Tofu on toast, The Good Apple Cafe, Derwent Street
Vegans, vegetarians and people with allergies are particularly well catered for at this city centre spot. It's built up a firm following for its breakfasts which are served until 2pm and include options such as tofu on toast. Photo: Stu Norton
4. Vegan brunch, Fausto, Marine Walk, Roker
One of the city's best independent coffee shops, Fausto offers vegan brunch options as well as vegan cakes. Fausto also recently opened a sister site, Fausto Coppa, at Beacon of Light. Photo: Stu Norton
