Washington school commemorates extraordinary year - and looks to the future - with special rainbow tree and plaque

Parents at a Washington primary school have come together to commemorate the extraordinary school year by planting a tree with a special rainbow plaque and raising over £250 for future school projects.

Parents of children at Rickleton Primary School wanted to thank dedicated staff for their hard work of looking after children during the pandemic and planted a cherry blossom tree in the school grounds to mark the year, with a special rainbow plaque.

Parents want the new tree to commemorate the extraordinary and unprecedented times the school has been through in recent months and begin to look towards the future.

Parents also chipped in to raise £255 for the school, which will go towards future projects and Deputy Head of Rickleton Primary, Alan Baker is proud of the community spirit the school has shown during the coronavirus crisis.

He said: “There’s been a lot of challenges during this difficult time. It's been very busy, but we had a big commitment to support as many members of our community as possible and what we’ve seen is parents, staff and children having a real positive support for each other.

Children are resilient, and we have had to be resilient for them and continue to support them. We want to look to the future now and look forward to welcoming back pupils in September.”

Since the beginning of the coronavius lockdown, Rickleton Primary School has had less than half its pupils attending but is already looking to the future and preparing to accommodate all pupils in September in a safe and secure way.
