Thursday, January 2 saw the official launch of the vegan steak bake – which comes 12 months on from the company’s vegan sausage roll.

The menu addition was confirmed after weeks of build-up and speculation about what the new vegan product would be.

A premiere event for the vegan steak bake took place in Newcastle on New Year’s Day, and it saw customers queue around the block to try and be one of the first to get their hands on one.

In a social media post, Greggs confirmed that “this season’s must-have bake” would be available in selected stores from Thursday.

Could it be the tastiest vegan creation ever?

Last January the bakery chain launched its hugely popular vegan sausage roll, in response to a petition calling for a plant-based version of the staple savoury in 2018.

The steak bake’s official announcement, which came at 6.30am on Thursday, has caused a buzz on social media, with dozens beginning the new year in a quest to find one in their local branch.

Airlie Frost said: “Definitely want one of these!”

Twitter user @stevemagnet added: “I'm going to get fat off of these, and I am going to like it.”

The company's vegan sausage roll hit the shelves back in 2019.
