The Met Office is predicting flurries of the white stuff for this week, with the mercury set to fall across the North East.

And there’s a good chance we’ll see snow at least on Christmas Eve.

The agency is forecasting rain for much of the country today, Tuesday, December 22, with heavier downfalls tomorrow, especially across the southern quarter of the UK, where a yellow severe weather warning has been issued.

Temperatures are expected to drop from the middle of the week as colder air moves down from the north across the country.

The forecast says: “Christmas Eve will be a dry day, with sunny spells for many.

"Showers are expected for some coastal areas, more especially for North Sea coasts which could turn to sleet or snow.”

And there’s a slight chance anyone pinning their hopes on a white Christmas could be lucky.

“An area of high pressure is expected to the west of the UK on Christmas Day, bringing cold and generally dry conditions for most,” says the Met Office.

"After a cold, frosty start, it will stay mainly dry with sunny periods. Coastal showers in the east should soon fade.

"Through the day, cloud will increase from the North West and could be thick enough for a few spots of light rain – or even a short-lived snow flurry in parts of the north."
