This beloved Sunderland dad is fighting against Motor Neurone Disease in a truly inspirational way
A beloved Sunderland dad diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease has been hailed as ‘an absolute force of nature’ with his positive outlook on life.
David Sampson and his family from Hylton Castle were ‘devastated’ when he was given the news that he had MND in January 2025.

But now, more than a year on, the family is focusing on ‘making the most of every day’ said David’s wife Kay.
And even though MND has significantly impacted David’s physical abilities, he is battling back in a way which has had charity officials hailing him as ‘an absolute force of nature.’

His close friend Darren will undertake a 220-mile cycling journey in May. The route will begin in Dunkeld and conclude at Hylton Castle, where David grew up.
David is hoping join Darren for parts of the journey as it retraces a route that has always meant so much to him.
The fundraising effort aims to support research into Motor Neurone Disease which currently has no cure. The family hopes their efforts will help spare others from experiencing the same heartbreak.

An initial target of £6,500 was set but the total has already reached £5,900 and people can donate on GoFundMe at bit.ly/4medUgC
David’s wife Kay said “We would never want any other family to go through what we have and still are. We need to put as much funding as possible into finding a cure. Right now, all we have is faith, hope, and prayers.”
“David is an inspiration to anyone fighting a terminal illness. His strength and resilience are what make us all so proud of him. After the diagnosis, a friend said to David, “to be lucky”. David considers himself to be that as he is living as positively as he can and concentrates on what he is still able to achieve.”

MND Association Regional Fundraising Manager Dominic McDonough said “David is an absolute force of nature who is working with Darren to achieve something incredible. It will be an amazing journey and every penny raised will bring us closer to a cure to this terrible disease. Thank you to David, his family, his friends and the entire community for their kindness in making this happen.”
The amazing challenge;
The three-day journey will follow this route:
Day 1 (May 17, 2026): Dunkeld to Musselburgh.
Day 2: Musselburgh to Belford.
Day 3: Belford to Hylton Castle.
