Wow! Here's what you said about a 1983 video of Sunderland showing Joseph's, Binns and Simpson's the bakers

Binns tunnel, a bannock from Simpsons and Joplings toys – the memories came flooding back for Echo followers when we shared rare video footage of Sunderland in 1983.

We showed you a film which was taken by Joe Liddle, 78, as he went on a drive round Sunderland in 1983.

He and his brother Keith, 63, kindly forwarded the footage to the Sunderland Echo and the film got a massive reaction on social media.

It reached around 110,000 people and many of you left your own memories of Wearside back then.

Eighty people commented on the video on the Echo’s Facebook page.

William Pugsley said: “Used to love going in Binns as a kid and using the tunnel under the road that connected the two stores.”

Kaye Sanders remembered ‘Binns and the spiral staircase’ while Christopher Pullen recalled: “Me and me mates used to get the E1 from Shields to go to Joplings in the 80s. Used to get WWF Wrestling figures as soon as they got them in.”

Ronnie Dale said he ‘loved Joseph's as a kid’ and Steven Bell recalled ‘buying a Subbuteo team in a brand new box and walking of Joseph’s with it. Happy days’

Jane A Lawson remembered when she ‘used to get a lovely bannock from Simpson. One of my dad's favourites’.”

And Jacqui Rich said: “I used to work in Joplings from '79 to the mid '80s, loved it.”

Shirley Parker commented: “Me and mam were just talking about Simpsons quiche, it was delicious mmmm.”

Linda Anne Duffy said: “My first job after leaving school was at Joplings back in 74.”

Glenda Burdon said: “Bought my first pair of roller boots with birthday money from my 10th birthday in 1983 , from Joseph sports shop.”

Darron Wardle commented: “My dad took me for my 6th birthday at Joseph’s. It was the first time I had spent money. I bought an X-wing fighter.”
