We asked the 6,000 members of Wearside Echoes – the Sunderland Echo’s specialist nostalgia page on Facebook – and these were among their favourites.
High on the list were Woolworths, C&A, Binns, Joplings and Josephs but there were plenty more too and here is our line-up.
Does this sound like a perfect mix of shops for a dream Sunderland High Street? Take a look and tell us more.

5. Josephs in Holmeside
Here it is as Christmas 1997. Josephs toy store was a big hit with children and adults alike. Norma Cummings and Lesley Mfon were fans. Photo: Sunderland Echo

6. C&A
Thousands of you shopped there. Loads of you loved the sales and others just met under the sign. But C&A was a big hit with shoppers including Sharon Barker, Jack Longstaff and Ingrid Golden. Photo: Sunderland Echo

7. Hills Book Store
Hills bookshop in 1994. It was in Waterloo Place and was a book lovers paradise. Would you have it back again? Sue Carlin would. Photo: Sunderland Echo

8. Brilliant Binns
The store that had it all, including a tunnel and a spiral staircase. It closed in 1993 but it still remains a favourite with fans including Lynda Green, Sue Boswell, and Railton Howes. Photo: se
