In the last half century or so, around two hundred public houses in Sunderland have closed. Many went in the 1960s in the redevelopment schemes in the East End, Hendon, Monkwearmouth and the ton centre.
In recent years, social and economic factors have seen another spate of pub closures.
“Even some of the new pubs built during this era have now gone,” said Philip Curtis of the Sunderland Antiquarian Society.
Today, we look back at some of those lost pubs. Our thanks go to Philip and Sunderland Antiquarian Society. To find out more about the society, visit its Facebook page or its website at http://www.sunderland-antiquarians.org/
