From Billy Hughes to Len Shackleton and Charlie Buchan to Willie Watson, some of Sunderland’s heroes of their era sold everything from shoes to sweets.
We have historians and authors Alan Brett and Philip Curtis to thank for this insight.
If you want to find out more about Wearside’s past, their book Going Shopping in Sunderland is available from Sunderland Museum, Sunderland Antiquarian Society, Fulwell Post Office, Clay’s Garden Centre and www.summerhillbooks.co.uk. It costs £4.99.
In the meantime, join us on a journey back to the shops of the stars.

5. Charlie Buchan
Buchan ran a sports shop in Blandford Street in the era when footballers became shop owners to boost their income during the days when clubs were not allowed to pay their players more than the maximum wage. Charlie scored 209 goals for Sunderland in 379 games, and four goals in six games for England. Photo: ugc

6. Willie Watson
England footballer and cricketer, Willie Watson, was just one of many Sunderland players who supplemented their income by running a shop. The wing half made 211 appearances for Sunderland between 1946 and 1954 and also played for England. Photo: other 3rd party
