Was there anything better than a Maws pie? Many of you didn’t think there was.

We heard how the pies were so popular that there were queues out the door and when we asked for your memories of those great days, the story reached more than 110,000 people.

Chris Sumby: Nothing better than coming in from school and seeing my mam had brought some pies in for tea. The steak inside them was chunky and loads of it.

Nita Tennant: Wish they would open up again,the mince pie AND the steak pies were the best,but the peas n gravy OMG!!!out of this world,I always got the big bags!!!

Helen Robinson: I remember being in Maws pie shop with my mam. We were in a long queue when an assistant came from behind the counter to update the queue as to what quantity of pies etc was left so people wouldn't wait if there wasn't enough.

Darren Dobson: Bring back Maws. Never had pies as good since they closed.

Lee Lancaster: My mam used to get them from the Maws pies delivery van in the 60s. They were lovely with the bags of peas and gravy.

Julie Gibson Pascoe: I remember buying Maws pies and the mushy peas and gravy going in a plastic bag knotted on top. Pies were delicious and I could just eat one right now.

Christine Taylor Laverick: Had to stand in a queue in Maws just off Hylton Road on Saturday mornings for pies and bag of peas and gravy x.

Caroline Leigh: We lived in Grindon and would walk the three miles to South Hylton and back with the pies and mushy peas in a bag.

Pam Stewart: If I had a Maws pie shop I would never be out. They were lovely cant beat them .

Angela Mullen: Even the folks from Shields loved these pies. Mam and dad expected theirs with mushy peas in a bag, nothing else would do.I lived in Gilsland Street and can remember a small shop in the next street.

Carol Robertson: Van used to come round Gilley Law shouting Mars Pies & Pea. The peas were in a plastic bag, good old days.
