The tunes are carefully chosen to help fans create the right atmosphere in the ground, but the ones that have been the best over the years is a highly subjective affair. The following list of 11 is in order of personal preference. You needn’t agree – and probably don’t. So starting from the top downwards ...
5. Theme from Z-Cars
Played at Roker Park in the 70s and 80s, it's actually a Liverpool folk song called Johnny Todd. Everton used it too, but no one has the faintest idea why it was appropriated by Sunderland. Perhaps a club director just liked it. Photo: Sunderland Echo
6. The Beginning of the Twist - Futureheads
Wearside favourites The Futureheads provide the only local talent on the list with this catchy indie hit. Hopefully the rumour that one band member supports Manchester United is untrue. Photo: Sunderland Echo
7. We Will Rock You - Queen
Aah, back to Roker Park again, where the accompanying stomping to this song echoed around the stadium . The song set the right tempo and is fondly remembered. Ne'er-do-wells would sing along, but replace the word 'rock'. Photo: Sunderland Echo
8. Elevation - U2
This rocker by Irish tax fanatics U2 heralded the teams during the Niall Quinn/Drumaville era. I'm not a U2 fan either, but it was significantly better than some of what followed, as you will see. Uplifting title (geddit?). Photo: Sunderland Echo
