9 photos of bustling Sunderland in the early 1960s - this is how your streets used to look

It was the era of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, new fashions – and all of these scenes closer to home.

We have 9 reminders of life on Wearside in 1960, 1961 and 1962 and it comes to us courtesy of Bill Hawkins of the Sunderland Antiquarian Society.

So whether it was the end of a work shift at SP Austin’s or a Vaux dray at Gillbridge Avenue, we have it all.

We have reminders of the orchestra at Thorney Close Secondary Modern and High Street West in 1962.

We thank Bill for another great collection of images.

Bill is a member of the Sunderland Antiquarian Society. To find out more about the history of Sunderland, visit the society’s Facebook page or its website at http://www.sunderland-antiquarians.org
