15 old Sunderland pubs in the Bishopwearmouth area of the city centre - some have change their names, some their addresses
We have 15 photographs from times gone by of pubs in the area.
It’s all thanks to Ron Lawson, the former JP who is also part of the Sunderland Antiquarian Society and who has shared a part of his huge photo selection.
Ron gets our thanks once more for another great feature from his own archive of 11,500 photos.
To find out more about the history of Sunderland, the society’s base in Douro Terrace is open between 9.30am and noon on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
If you’ve got pub memories please contact Chris Cordner on [email protected].

5. Post Office Restaurant
The Post Office Restaurant - which later become the Windsor Castle - was closed and demolished in the early 2000s and was in Nile Street. It had previously been known as the Criterion and first opened in 1853. Photo: Ron Lawson

6. Windsor Castle
The Windsor Castle which had a marine cannon outside it. It was used as a glancing stone and Ron explained that it was a merchant navy cannon which was used as a glancing stone because the carts at the time had steel hubs and this stopped them from damaging the brickwork of the pub. 7. Red Lion Hotel
The Red Lion Hotel in Crowtree Road. Ron described it as a 'good looking pub' and it was open from 1827 to 1973. Photo: Ron Lawson

8. Star Hotel
The Star Hotel in Durham Road and Reynoldson Street was photographed in 1961. It ran from 1868 to 1972. Who remembers it? Photo: Ron Lawson
