After a statue of slave trader Edward Colston was torn down by protesters in Bristol, attention has been turned to statues and monuments across the UK and questions asked about who they honour.
We’ve looked at 12 statues and monuments in and around Sunderland to see who or what they honour.
13. Penshaw Monument
It should be noted that Penshaw Monument is, well, a monument not a statue. It was built in honour of aristocrat John Lambton, the 1st Earl of Durham who lived from 1792 1840. He was born into great family wealth derived largely from mining land near his family home, Lambton Castle. He represented the area in parliament and became known as radical Jack after his backing of liberal causes. Photo: Sunderland Echo
