Sunderland named sixth best local authority to exercise in North East

Sunderland has been named sixth best place to exercise in the region out of all 10 North East local authorities.

Sunderland was given a score of 51.4 out of 100, placing in 136th nationally. The scoring index was based on factors including number of gyms, leisure centres, swimming pools and sports halls per resident, parkrun events, traffic-free cycle routes, access to parks and green space, and the cost of the cheapest budget gym membership nearby.

The scoring matrix placed Sunderland in-between Newcastle in seventh, with a score of 51, and Hartlepool in sixth, with a score of 51.6.

Northumberland was top of the regional table with a score of 68.1, placing the county third nationally.

The table was complied by adult services provider AdultWork.

A spokesperson said: “Where you live has a big effect on how easy it is to fit exercise into everyday life. A gym, pool, or a traffic-free path close to home makes it far simpler to build a regular workout routine.”
