Washington Community Food Project (WCFP) have been overwhelmed with community support in recent weeks, despite the uncertainty surrounding coronavirus putting the country into strict lockdown measures.

The foodbank has praised members of the Washington community for coming together in difficult times and not forgetting about the vulnerable people in need.

Volunteers for the foodbank are expecting an increase in demand from vulnerable families due to the stockpiling caused by coronavirus and are delighted members of the community have not let them down.

WCFP said: “Amongst this current crisis, everyone at WCFP would like to say that we are once again overwhelmed, warmed, and infinitely grateful for the support of the Washington community.

The donations as well as the offers for help and general messages of kindness have been unprecedented. It is amazing and humbling to see people coming together to help the most vulnerable, especially in difficult and uncertain times.”

While the WCFP team is working as hard as possible to support the community, it’s chairman Clive Bowman and wife Maureen have put themselves into self-isolation as they are aged in their 70s, but are happy to see how the Washington community has responded to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

Clive Bowman added: “We would like to thank the companies that have donated to us including Hillary’s blinds with fresh fruit, the cafes of Clays Garden Centre and Sainsbury’s as well as the many individual donations of food by the general public.”
