New data released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) shows which areas of Sunderland have seen the highest number of deaths related to Covid-19.

The statistics, published on Friday, May 1 give a breakdown of the total number of deaths within the city for the first time.

According to the figures 193 coronavirus deaths were confirmed in Sunderland up until April 17.

Overall, Southwick is the area which has seen the highest number, with 16 recorded.

Fourteen deaths had been recorded in Hetton-le-Hole North and 12 in Hylton Red House and Marley Pots.

No deaths have been recorded at Pennywell and Grindon, Silksworth or Concord and Sulgrave.

The ONS data only includes deaths which occurred between March, 1- April 17 and deaths where coronavirus was the underlying cause or was mentioned on the death certificate as a contributing factor.

The information is based on details collected when the deaths were registered and does not reflect the actual location of the deaths.
