The 14 Sunderland areas with the highest Covid case rates as city remains highest in region

Areas in and around Sunderland have seen a fall in Covid cases in the week – but it still has the highest case rate in the LA7.

These are the 14 areas in and around Sunderland with the highest Covid case rates recorded between Thursday, January 14, and Wednesday, January 20, according to official figures.

In the seven-day period, 1,056 confirmed cases were confirmed in Sunderland – which is down from 1,157 compared to the week before.

Sunderland has the highest Covid case rate out of seven North East local authorities – ahead of Northumberland, Newcastle, Gateshead, Durham, South Tyneside and North Tyneside.

Sunderland’s director of public health says residents are following guidance but there is ‘no clear picture’ as to why the city has the highest weekly rate of infection.

The case rate takes into account the number of people living in each area compared to the number of people who have tested positive for the virus and are measured by 100,000 people.

The figures are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two). Pictures are for illustrative purposes only.
