Sunderland's weekly coronavirus rate rises by more than 500% as new figures show it has one of the biggest jumps in cases

The weekly latest case figures for the number of people who have tested positive for coronavirus in Sunderland has risen by more than 500%.

The statistics from Public Health England show the number per 100,000 people in the city found to have Covid-19 during the seven days up to Saturday, September 5, stood at 57.3 – that’s 159 new cases.

That is a rise from the week before, in the seven days up to Saturday, August 29, when it was 8.6, which equates to 24 people, which means the increase in percentage between the two stands at 562%.

The latest numbers come as the Government announced it would be bringing in a law change which will mean it will be illegal to gather in groups of more than six from Monday.

The Government hopes that the change will make it easier for the police to identify and disperse illegal gatherings.

The figures are brought together through the tests in laboratories and the wider community, although the data for the most recent days, from September 6 to 8, has been excluded, as it is incomplete and likely to be revised.

Bolton has seen the largest case increase, rising by 369, or 128.3 cases per 100,000 people.

It led Health Secretary Matt Hancock to impose further measures in that area, restricting all hospitality to takeaways only, with venues will to close between 10pm and 5am.

In Bradford, it has risen from, from 49.1 to 74.7, with 403 new cases, and in Birmingham the rate has risen from 30.5 to 69.1, with 789 new cases.
