Sunderland set to hit vaccination milestone this week with all four top priority groups to get first Covid jab

Sunderland’s coronavirus vaccination clinics are on target to cover all four top priority groups with their first jab by the end of this week.

The six hubs across the city are now up and running and are expected to hit the milestone according to a leading GP who is overseeing the immunisation programme, which launched in mid-December.

He tweeted: “This week, Sunderland PCNs will reach a key milestone in vaccination uptake.

“On track to vaccinate our top four priority cohorts by end of week.

“PCNs have got the capacity and the capability to vaccinate at a more rapid pace but we appreciate that vaccine supply remains an issue.”

The national target is to cover the first four groups by the middle of this month.

He added: “Please keep your guard up.

"The virus continues to circulate in high numbers and the new variant is very transmissable...keep your mask on and maintain your distance at all times.

"Vaccines are effective but only part of the solution.”

Sunderland also has the mass vaccination site at Nightingale Hospital North East, near Nissan.

Those in the first four priority groups are;

1 - Older adults in care homes and staff;

2 – 80 years of age and over and frontline health and social care workers

3 – 75 years of age and over

4 – 70 years of age and over and clinically extremely vulnerable individuals, not including pregnant women and those under 16 years of age.

These groups are followed by the 65 years-plus, 16 to 65 years in an at-risk group; 60 years-plus; 55 years of age and above; 50 years of age and over and then the rest of the population.
