A Sunderland Dad has said he feels “lucky to be alive” beating coronavirus. He has now issued a message to those who continue to ignore lockdown measures.

Dean Frost, 39 from Humbledon spent eight days in hospital battling the illness, during which doctors gave him a 50/50 chance of survival.

He first began experiencing symptoms on Monday, March 23 – a week later he was in hospital are struggling to breathe.

Dean said: “I was tested as soon as I arrived. Doctors from intensive care said I was 30 minutes away from being put into a coma to help my body fight the virus.

“I managed to pull round after I was given oxygen so I didn’t need to be put on a ventilator.

“I was told that I had a 50/50 chance of survival, that’s how poorly I was.”

Dean’s daughter has put together a video, showing images of him during his battle with the illness.

It is hoped that it will spread the message of how serious the virus is to people who are ignoring social distancing rules.

Mr Frost added: “I’m not sure where I caught it from but the next person who catches it might not be as lucky as me.

“I wasn’t classed as a ‘high-risk’ person and I ended up with stage four Covid-19.

“The video was too emotional when I first watched it. Now I want people to see it as I think that it definitely gets the message across of how serious this can be.”

He also thanked the NHS staff who cared for him, saying: “The doctors and nurses were fantastic.

“I want to say a big thank you to all of them on ward E56 at the Freeman Hospital, their care and support was unbelievable.”
