Police step up their presence along the coast in Sunderland in an effort to ensure lockdown measures are being followed

There has been a notably high police presence along the coast in Sunderland and Seaham as efforts are made to ensure the public are following social distancing measures.

It comes after reports have been circulating that people are driving to the seaside to get their one hour of exercise a day.

The Government has said this is not an “essential” journey and that people should exercise close to their homes.

In images captured by Echo photographer Stu Norton, a police presence can be seen at various points along the coast and notices have been put up in Seaham car parks.

Assistant Chief Constable for Northumbria Police, Helen McMillan said: “We have had large crowds of people at our coastal areas in recent days and that is not helpful and could be putting lives at risk.

“If people refuse to comply with our instruction then we will enforce this legislation.”

Northumbria Police also said that they will look to “engage and encourage” the public to follow government measures during the coronavirus outbreak, but will take action when necessary.

Following new powers granted to police forces across the UK, officers now have the ability to issue eye-watering on the spot fines.
