The areas of the North East with the most new coronavirus cases
According to figures from the Press Association, we have put together a list of the Covid-19 case rates across the region.

The figures show the coronavirus case rate per 100,000 people in the seven days leading up to and including September 23.
The rates are based on tests carried out in laboratories (pillar one of the Government’s testing programme) and in the wider community (pillar two).
Both Sunderland and Newcastle saw a sharp increase in the number of positive coronavirus cases – with the cities firmly in the top 20 most affected areas of the country.
Here is the case rate for the 12 local authority areas across the North East.

9. County Durham
Despite having the highest confirmed cases overall for the North East, the rate across the county sits at 86.8 per 100,000 people after 493 new cases of coronavirus were recorded. Photo: Frank Reid
In terms of overall cases, Darlington is the least affected area of the region. It currently has a rate of 57.1 cases per 100,000 people after 78 more people tested positive last week. Photo: Getty Images
