Samantha Hickman only took over Ell’s Kitchen on March 9. Following a booming first week, the 34-year-old says the shop, which serves hot and cold food to takeaway, has become much quieter as measures to stop the spread of the coronavirus increase.

The kind-hearted owner is offering all leftover food from the end of the day to elderly and vulnerable members of the community who are struggling during the crisis.

And after Boris Johnson announced that all restaurants and pubs should close, Samantha is taking orders to ensure Sunderland mums still get a proper Sunday dinner this Mother’s Day.

The mum-of-four said: “After the news that restaurants will close, I decided to open and offer deliveries of Sunday lunch on Mother’s Day as I’m sure many had bookings that are now not possible, myself included.

“One of the orders I’ve had is a surprise delivery from a customer in New Zealand who wants a Sunday lunch delivered for their mam, who lives in Sunderland.

“I have also offered all my vulnerable customers any food that I have left at end of each day to try help. It’s free and I can deliver.”

Having opened her first business less than two weeks ago, Samantha is facing uncertain times.

“I’m going to stay open as long as I can," she said. “It’s quieter but I do get customers coming from the hospital.”
