It was part of a national day of reflection on Tuesday, March 23 – exactly one year after Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced the first national lockdown to halt the spread of the virus.
Penshaw Monument, the Northern Spire bridge, Hylton Castle, Fulwell Mill, Keel Square, the white lighthouse at Seaburn, High Street West and The Beacon of Light were all lit up to pay tribute to those who passed away.
