Sunderland landmarks lit up yellow to remember those have died during the Covid pandemic

Iconic landmarks across Wearside were lit up yellow to remember everyone who has lost their lives during the Covid-19 pandemic.

It was part of a national day of reflection on Tuesday, March 23 – exactly one year after Prime Minister Boris Johnson introduced the first national lockdown to halt the spread of the virus.

Penshaw Monument, the Northern Spire bridge, Hylton Castle, Fulwell Mill, Keel Square, the white lighthouse at Seaburn, High Street West and The Beacon of Light were all lit up to pay tribute to those who passed away.

More than 800 people in the city and 156,100-plus across the UK have sadly lost their lives to Covid-19.

Spearheaded by the end-of-life charity, Marie Curie, the national day of reflection also included a minute silence at 12 noon.
