On Monday, March 23, 2020, the Government imposed new measures to restrict the movement of UK residents in an effort to combat COVID-19.
With residents only allowed to shop for food and exercise once a day and businesses and leisure facilities ordered to close, the streets of Sunderland became empty as the public adhered to the new regulations.
5. The Bridges
The normally busy High Street West stretch that leads over to The Bridges entrance was empty.

Fawcett Street bus stops are normally busy with shoppers and workers but buses remained mainly empty as lockdown began.
